Mythology that becomes alive
In this cape, mythology says that Aegeus ,king of Athens, was waiting for his son to come back from Crete where he was send to fight Minotaur, a monster that was half man and half bull. One day he saw that the boat of his son came with black sails, and thought that his son came dead. Thus, from this cape he jumped and died, from him the name of Aegean sea was given.
History
In Sounio stands the Temple of Poseidon, it was constructed between 444-440 BC and it was build to honor the god of Sea, Poseidon. In ancient period Greek built temples to honor their gods with gifs, so that the gods will protect them. Greece as a maritime country wanted the protection from Poseidon thus the temple they built was very admirable.
